Two Poems

Two Poems

Interesting Link:

The two poems that I chose to read and “review” were “ Photograph from September 11” , and “ The Woman Hanging From The Thirteenth Floor Window”. In reading “Photograph from September 11th”, I had a very emotional experience. In both of these poems I felt something from them. Maybe, that it’s sad and depressing and I feel sorry for the event that is happening? First of all September 11th is such a memorable event in our country’s history, and it made such a dramatizing effect to our country; so much that it lead us to war. As soon as Szymborska starts the poem with the first line, it starts the reader off remembering this event. Szymborska state, “ They jumped from the burning floors, one, two , a few more, higher, lower”. This line makes me think of people jumping out of the destroyed burning building, wondering if they would rather risk the chance of dieing as they fell down through the sky, or if they would rather burn to death. In the poem, “ The Woman Hanging From the Thirteenth Floor Window”, the first line states, “ She is the woman hanging from the 13th floor window”. Right there and then I think suicide. As I read along in the poem I imagine a lonely, sad, woman that it very confused about her feelings. She feels the need to jump, but at the same time the memories of her family, and childhood, tell her not to. In reading both of these poems, I enjoyed reading very good poetry. Poetry of Witness to me is an emotional subject, and is a very interesting read.

The Difference

The Differences Between Summary and Analysis

In this essay I am going to explain the difference between a summary and a analysis. A summary tells you what happened, while an analysis tells you what and why it happened. Say you wanted to write a summary and analysis on Homer’s Iliad. A summary of that epic tale would be, “ The Greek armies combined their forces and destroyed the grand city of Troy.” Now that would be sufficient information if you only wanted basic information on the Iliad. If you wanted to have more info on the Iliad, however, that is where you would state an analysis: “The Greek armies combined their forces and destroyed the grand city of Troy. The reason why is a prince of Troy stole Helen and took her back to Troy, and the Greeks swore vengeance.” The reason this would serve to give readers more info is, simply put, it describes a circumstance in which one faction acts in a certain fashion, and the other faction reacts in another way in regards to the first action taken. It’s really all about how much detail is given that is the main difference between a summary and an analysis.

Good readers, and Good Writers

Image from:
In the reading, Nabokou states that a good reader consists of many things. First of all you should notice details. Also, you must have imagination, memory, and an artistic sense. He also states that to be a reader at all, you must reread things, and be an active reader. We must have time to get into the book that we read, as if its our own other world. I believe everything that Nabokou states about a good reader is true. I too believe that imagination, and an artistic delight should be in a good reader. I don't  consider myself to be a good reader. I'm not the worst, but, i do need to improve on some things, such as re-reading things.
